Mechanical Environmental Engineer

This position will work closely with the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) which is a multi-technology office responsible for overseeing more than $27B of investment in large scale demonstrations in emerging technologies such as clean hydrogen, carbon capture, advanced nuclear reactors, grid-scale energy storage, industrial emissions reductions as well as demonstrations in rural and socioeconomically disadvantaged regions.


This position is remote, with the expectation that candidates can work during Eastern Time Zone office hours. Residency in the United States is a mandatory requirement.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Conduct independent engineering / due diligence technical advisory reviews of the environmental systems (e.g., pollution control technologies) of clean energy technologies and projects.
    • Able to evaluate the expected or actual functionality and performance of pollution control and monitoring systems of project.
    • Identify key gaps / needs as it relates to the functionality and performance of pollution control and monitoring systems of project.
    • Identify project risks and risks mitigants of technology and project. Articulate recommendations for improvement (when necessary).
    • Work in teams and independently to provide engineering expertise on various pollution control and monitoring systems technologies.
    • Draft independent engineering / due diligence reports on evaluated systems.
    • Able to draft a data table and risk table (as part of an independent engineering / due diligence report or otherwise).
    • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication – communicating succinctly and clearly.
    • Liaise with a variety of stakeholders when providing engineering expertise (e.g.,  clients, technology providers, other engineering disciplines).
Qualifications:
  • This position is remote, with the expectation that candidates can work during Eastern Time Zone office hours. Residency in the United States is a mandatory requirement.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical (or environmental) engineering required.
  • Background in environmental control systems for power and energy generation and energy-related industrial systems, particularly with clean energy technologies, for example:
    • Air pollution control equipment (APCE) and related systems
    • Ash handling systems (e.g., fly ash and bottom ash)
    • Process wastewater systems
    • Water treatment systems
    • Cooling water evaporation systems
    • Process facility effluent
    • Gas (e.g., CO2) compression and pipeline transport systems
    • Hydrogen storage and transportation (including familiarity with hydrogen compression and liquefaction)
  • Experience providing independent engineering, technical advisory, or due diligence services.
  • Ability to review related contracts, such as engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts, equipment supply agreements, O&M agreements, and service agreements is a plus.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience practicing in this field, preferably as an engineer-of-record.
  • A licensed professional engineer (P.E.) is preferred.
  • Master’s Degree in a related field is a plus.
  • Ability to manage projects is preferred.
  • Due to the nature of the government contract requirements and/or clearances requirements, US citizenship is required.
